Boss’s game-changing first fuzz circuit, the Boss FZ-2 Hyper Fuzz, shaped a genre of music in the mid-late 1990s. The Boss FZ-2 Hyper Fuzz was made for only five years, was discontinued in 1997, and now has become extremely popular and collectible.
The Boss FZ-2 Hyper Fuzz was designed to emulate the classic rock sounds of the 60s and 70’s and in one word meant to be like the Univox Super Fuzz, the effect used by Pete Townshend on the album “Live at Leeds.” Like the Univox Super Fuzz, the FZ-2 has two distinct fuzz tones, referred to as “Fuzz 1” and “Fuzz 2, and has a two-band active EQ. The “Bass” band is a gyrator EQ half an octave wide and centered at approximately 100Hz, and the other a Tube Screamer-style active high-pass filter. Both Gain and Level knobs function as volume controls for the Boost mode, which boosts the overall volume.
The selling price for the Boss FZ-2 Hyper Fuzz is more than likely to continue to slowly rise over time. Even with the introduction of Behringer’s clone with a lower price and extra feature than the Boss FZ-2, the Hyper Fuzz is listed on eBay from $250USD to $350USD as of 2025. It is hard to imagine the prices of the Boss Hyper Fuzz ever coming down in cost.
