Journalists throughout the world make an important daily contribution to truth and facts and some journalists stand out strongly in history. There are three remarkable journalists I would like to highlight. Barbara Walters was an iconic American journalist and creator of the long-running ABC series, The View. Barbara Walters was born on the 25 of September 1929 in Boston, Massachusetts. Walters graduated with a degree in English in 1951 and started her career in television broadcasting in the same year at NBC, New York. In 1979 Barbara Walters joined the television show 20/20 and became co-host alongside Hugh Downs. She was famous for outstanding interviews with famous people like the Shah of Iran, Gandhi, and First lady Betty Ford. Walters created the groundbreaking talk show The View in 1997 and has won countless awards including a dozen Daytime Emmy awards.
Walter Cronkite was considered a leading voice in the news for over two decades during some of the greatest turbulent times in United States history. Cronkite was born on November 4, 1916, in St. Joseph, Missouri to a dentist and a pianist. He left the University of Texas in 1935 during his junior year and began working for several local and national newspapers. During the 1950s Walter Cronkite became a household name while anchoring the CBS Evening News. Cronkite was active during the Vietnam War and the JFK and Martin Luther King assassinations. Walter Cronkite has won countless awards throughout his long, impressive career in American Journalism. Walter Cronkite died in 2009 at the age of ninety-two.
Edward R. Murrow was born on April 25, 1908, in Polecat Creek, North Carolina, graduated from Washington State College (Washington State University) in 1930 with a degree in Speech and Communications. Murrow climbed the ranks in the news and was heading the news during the 1930’s and 1940’s. Edward R. Murrow’s reporting on World War II sent shockwaves across America as the learned of the German bombings of London, England. President Roosevelt awarded Murrow the Medal of Merit. Edward R. Murrow used his status to inform on the dangers of McCarthy's attack on civil liberties, leading to the downfall of McCarthyism and the censure of the United States Senate. Murrow died of lung cancer in April of 1965.
