The House of Blues

By Vicki Lynn

The House of Blues Entertainment was established by Isaac Tigrett and Dan Aykroyd, co-star of "The Blues Brothers," in 1992 at Harvard Square in Cambridge, Massachusetts. The chain of live music restaurants has been a division of Live Nation Entertainment since 2006. There are eleven locations throughout the United States.
Dan Aykroyd, Aerosmith, Paul Shaffer, River Phoenix, Jim Belushi, Harvard University, and others helped finance the venture. The House of Blues is known for its commitment to diversity with a mission to "celebrate and demonstrate the power of music to bring people together". The live music restaurants offer a variety of music including blues, rock, jazz, country, and hip hop.
The original location in Cambridge, Massachusetts closed in 2003 when a larger venue in Boston was wanted; however, the hands-in-concrete driveway where Blues Brothers and others left their imprints remains a tourist attraction.

The House of Blues has a solid focus on philanthropy and unveiled the International House of Blues Foundation, a 501(c)(3) non-profit to provide arts programs, resources, and musical instruments for youth, and has made more than $20 million for the youth program in its over 20 years in existence. Live Nation acquired House of Blue Entertainment in the summer of 2006 and started Live Nation Club and Theater Division.
