Band Mates or Opportunists?

By Billie Jack

Opportunists takes advantage without regard for other band members, and are served by their own self-interest; but could also include the group as a whole. Opportunists consciously take advantage of circumstances.
Even though there is a negative moral connotation to opportunism it can be defined neutrally as putting one's own self interest or the interest of the group as a whole when there is an opportunity, it is capitalizing on the mistakes of others, to exploit opportunities created by the weaknesses or mistakes of others.
Usually opportunism occurs when people are not restrained in their behavior, when there is less cost to them, when pressured to act or choose when their beliefs and morals are tested or challenged. There is a difference when action is taken when the opportunity arises and when action is taken without regard to principles to reach one's goals or the goals of the group.
In business opportunism is often considered entrepreneurship. In human behavior opportunism is behavior without integrity by abandoning morals usually upheld. It can be difficult to define the line between legitimate self-interest and anti-social selfishness.
Some will consider opportunism as a normal function of life; as quoted by Stanley Baldwin, "I would rather be an opportunist and float than go to the bottom with my principles around my neck". And others view it as a violation of moral principles, that the opportunist seeks personal advantage by putting personal interest above others without regard to morals, and disregarding the negative outcomes to others.
An opportunist group will refuse to reduce the support, influence, popularity or wealth of the group even though doing so upholds the principles they believe. When regulating behavior that is contrary to society norms one must know where to draw the line, when to take action, and not take action when upholding the overall morals of the group.
Lord Acton said, "All power corrupts, and absolute power corrupts absolutely". A group's existence may be uncertain and they may feel they have nothing to lose by grabbing all they can grab without regard to the consequences to others, perhaps believing if they don't take advantage others will take advantage of them without regard to them.
People may very well do anything to survive, to win, and to keep floating, that they may be willing to disregard the rules of the game, without regard to their ideals and principles. People may regard wealth, fame, and success more important than you and your group and they are willing to succeed by any means necessary, even if it means being an opportunist and keeping you under them.
You never know who will be at the top once you reach the pinnacle, do you want to add more friends in life or more enemies in your life? If you're difficult don't believe for a second that you'll be such a huge success that you can disregard others, your success will depend on those around you, friend or foe. The choice is yours, what you will be remembered for as a group is your treatment of others, and not just your music, because you will be defined by those you came in contact with long after your music is in the top 40.
