Learning Guitar by Listening to Other Guitarists

By Trish K. Magill

As a guitarist, you can only go so far sitting at home playing solo. Once you join a band your timing and fingering need to be spot on. If you fluctuate in your timing the entire music piece falls apart. Changing chords and notes in time with the music is crucial in becoming an expert guitarist.
Once you begin playing in a band, you will begin learning the skills needed in interplay between the band members. Most guitarists want to gain enough skill to play with other musicians. An effective way to practice before you begin playing with other musicians is to play along with your favorite recordings.
Many well-known guitarists started by playing along with records from their favorite artist; blues guitarist Eric Clapton would listen and play along with records from blues musicians he admired, playing their songs for long hours until he felt he perfected their pieces.

The benefits of playing along with an accompaniment:
1. You do not have to play alone.
2. You learn to play in time.
3. You learn to play in key.
An accompaniment can be the following:
1. A regular song recording.
2. Recorded backing track.
3. A self-made recording.
4. A software program.
If you are having trouble playing along with a song recording, you need to choose a different song, which is better suited to your ability. If you can follow along with a recording, then you are ready to play over a track in which your part has been removed.
Backing tracks are recorded music tracks that usually feature drums, bass, keys, and rhythm guitars. Backing tracks are used primarily for lead-guitar playing. You can find guitar backing tracks common to rock, blues, country, funk, and jazz.
By connecting your guitar and backing tracks to an audio mixer and using earphones as a monitor system you can practice in private. You can also play music through ear buds and play along with an acoustic guitar or quietly with an amplified guitar.
You can also create full band tracks, either by playing and recording separate instruments yourself or by enlisting the help of other musicians.
And you can record yourself using your computer, cell phone, or another type of recording device. And by putting tracks together of chord changes and then playing it back while you play another part you can improve your musicianship and make an impact once you finally play for an audience of more than one.
