The Advantages and Disadvantages of Modifying a Squier Bullet

By Terry Ann

When considering whether to modify a Squier Bullet Stratocaster you must first consider that the body of the Bullet Strat is thinner and smaller than the standard Fender Stratocaster. The potentiometer post is wider than on the standard Stratocaster, the electronic shielding is the bare minimum required to reduce feedback from the pickups, and the tuning keys are held on by screws in the back of the headstock, and not the usual nut on the front of the headstock, and the tuner shaft holes are slightly smaller.
With a thinner body the tremolo cannot be upgraded to a standard tremolo because the tremolo block will protrude out the back of the guitar and will need to be replaced with a tremolo of the same size. However, the string saddles can be replaced with standard Fender saddles, and by replacing the saddles and the machine heads the guitar will keep in tune better than the stock setup.
If you want to replace the pickguard with a sturdier 3-ply pickguard the screws may not line up, which is common, but you will need to change a few screw locations. There are companies like WD which specialize in pickguards and make pickguards for Bullet Stratocasters from the '82 Bullets up to the newer Bullets.

There are few limitations for upgrading the pickups and electronics because there should be enough room inside the cavities to replace the electronics with the most standard guitar parts.
If you want to give your guitar a vintage appeal, you can soak the knobs in cold coffee a minute or so and repeat if necessary to give them a darker look. You can stain the front headstock with a dark shoe polish and do the same with the neck if you slightly sand off the urethane finish and then reapply a clear sealant. Be careful when sanding around the Squier logo; however, you can remove the logo and replace it with a waterslide decal to give it even more of a vintage look.
Keep in mind that Squier guitars are good guitars to modify because they are inexpensive and do not require a lot of expense to modify, making the guitars great instruments in which to sharpen your modification skills.
