Cozart Mandocaster

By Dorothy Rose

x
Cozart 8-string electric mandolin "Mandocaster" with a Stratocaster style Paulownia body, hard maple neck, and rosewood fretboard; has a sunburst finish, 13.85-inch scale length and a 28mm nut.
x
This is a copy of Fender's 4-string Electric Mandolin, which was produced from 1956 to 1976 with a body shape based on the Stratocaster, nicknamed the "Mandocaster"; however, compared to a Fender Mandocaster this is clearly a bottom feeder.
x
Little information is available on the Cozart instrument and just as little information on the Cozart Company as a whole, what I gather is that these are "kit" instruments, put together and sold by individual builders.
x
The tuners are heavy, and it appears to me that the neck is spliced together near the headstocks.
x
The body is a thick slab compared to the overall size of the instrument but would have to be for the electronics to fit in the cavities.
x
The solid-body Cozart 8-string Electric Mandolin includes a well-made Gig bag.
x
The Mandocaster was new with plastic wrap still on the pickguard and under the screw heads. The build quality of this little electric mandolin is excellent and considered one of the better 8-string solid body mandolins, at least at the incredibly low price it was purchased.
x
If you are looking for a mandolin you do not have to worry about losing, damaging, or giving a hard ride around the block; an instrument you can take on vacation and not worry about, the Cozart Mandocaster might be suitable for that purpose.
