Boss BR1200 Multi-Track Recorder

x
The Boss BR1200 multi-track recorder is the replacement for the BR1180 v2 recorder and introduces a USB interface which allows a computer attachment for computer editing of song files as well as backing up song files and stereo mixes. The Boss 1200 is a stand-alone multi-track and provides all the tools needed to finish a demo song or even an album.
x
The Boss BR1200 recorder has twelve tracks, each with an additional fifteen virtual tracks which can be used for storing various tracks making the recorder able to record 192 separate tracks. There are 10 fading tracks along with a master fader controller; the reason for the limitations is due to tracks 9 and 10 and 11 and 12 being fixed stereo tracks and require only one fader control each; tracks 9 and 10 are for rhythm sections such as keyboards or drum machines, whereas tracks 11 and 12 are for stereo mix downs.
x
The recorder features a 40GB hard drive, providing ample space for 16-bit, 44.1 kHz recordings. This capability gives musicians the ability to loop and overdub their vocals and guitar work. Phrases can be sequenced and looped and taken from an audio track, loaded from the onboard CD_RW, or even imported via the USB connection.
x
When recording guitar and vocals the Boss BR1200 is equipped with COSM, Composite Object Sound Modeling, offering amplifier, cabinet, preamp simulations, reverb, modulation, and distortion effects; the recorder also provides three-part vocal harmony, which includes pitch-correction, and a built-in guitar tuner.
x
The CD-RW allows for the recording of normal stereo audio CDs for playback on standard CD players and saving WAV and AIFF files. You can also load music onto the 40GB hard drive via the CD-RW, and allows for Write/Play, Data Save/Load, and Loop Phrase Import.
x
After recording compression and EQ can be applied along with loop effects, the EQ offers high and low bands and a mid-range peak, the bands can be swept over 40-1500 Hz, 200 Hz-4k Hz, and 500 Hz-18k Hz respectively, the mid-band's Q value adjustable over a 0.3-16 range. Each band offers up to 12dB of cut or boost.
x
The choice of loop effects is limited to three reverbs, two delays, and a chorus. The first delay is standard, with a time value ranging from 10ms to 1s. The second is designed to emulate double-tracking by having a short 0.5-50ms range. The chorus and delay are on the same send/return loop and cannot be used together; however, the reverb has a send and can be used simultaneously with the other effects. Reverb options are simple with Hall, Room, and Plate patches. The reverb algorithms are not of the highest quality, but still usable.
x
Many musicians may aim to produce finished CDs directly from the recorder. The BR1200 includes a Mastering Tool Kit, which allows for the creation of commercial release CDs, although it does not have a facility for adding CD sub-code information.
