H.S. Anderson Super Strat Made in Japan

By Trish K. Magill

x
The Toshio "Mori" Moridaira, (Morris) factory started manufacturing quality handcrafted guitars in 1967 in Nagano, Japan, producing guitars for Hohner, like the Morris guitar, the Coronado guitar, H.S. Anderson guitars, a series of Lotus guitars, as well as Sakai guitars.
x
Because of Mr. Moridaira's association with Gibson, Mr. Moridaira visited the Gibson Factory in Kalamazoo, Michigan in 1964, earning the nickname "Mori" at the time. Mr. Toshio Moridaira was the first distributor to carry Fender and Gibson instruments in Japan.
x
Prince was known for playing the Mad Cat guitar; originally, manufactured under "H.S. Anderson", a brand name by the Japanese Morris Guitar Company. Mr. Moridaira sold the rights to H.S. Anderson to the German company Hohner, the makers of well-known harmonicas.
x
There is not any information available on the model of H.S. Anderson guitar shown in the photos that I have been able to find. And Hohner kept manufacturing guitars in Japan; however, the headstock logo was changed to "Hohner" but stylized in the same font as the H.S. Anderson logo.
x
Early guitars often changed slightly due to a lawsuit from Fender Instruments. The guitars would have sold for about $775.00 in today's currency.
